Bridget Teresa Burke, 86, passed away peacefully at her home in Hyannis, MA on July 5, 2022 after a long illness. Breda, as she was known to most, was the daughter of James and Mary Rossiter and was born in County Wexford, Ireland in 1935. She completed her training as a registered nurse and midwife in Dublin, where she worked after graduation. She was recruited to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston in 1962, where she continued her work as a registered nurse in obstetrics. In Boston she met the love of her life, Bob Burke, and they married in 1967. Breda became a US citizen in 1968 and always remained proud of her Irish heritage. Breda, Bob and their family settled in Marlborough, MA, and Breda spent many years working in geriatric care at Cushing Hospital in Framingham, MA. Breda and Bob moved to Hyannis in 2005, where Breda spent several years volunteering at the Barnstable Senior Center and served as an officer with the Barnstable Council on Aging.
Breda was an exceptionally kind, generous and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She had many passions in her life, from tennis to gardening to walking on the beach, but she had no greater passion than for time spent with her family. Whether on a big vacation or a simple backyard barbeque, Breda was truly in her element when surrounded by her loving family. Her children and grandchildren brought her such joy, and that joy was returned many times over.
Nothing made her happier than time spent with Bob, her husband of 55 years. Their selfless love served as an example to all who knew them, and their time together was precious right until the end.
Breda is survived by her husband, son Bob and his wife Liz of Hopkinton, MA, daughter Ashling of Plymouth MA and grandchildren Margaret, Emma, Noah, Olivia and Ben, all of whom miss her dearly.
Services will be private; in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute of Boston in her name.
