Born in 1918 in his family home in Keith's Cove, Tennessee, he was the oldest of 11 children. He married a school teacher, Linda Moody in 1947.
They had three children, John Moody, Dan, and Marie. He had eight grandchildren: Gregory Keith, David Keith, Robert Keith, Carol Keith, Laura Keith, Jessica Keith, Stesha Ross, and Benjamin Ross; and three great grandchildren: Madison Keith, Evan Keith, and Ethan Keith.
His many jobs included working in his father’s sawmill until he was 11; working as a store keeper in New Market as a teenager during the Depression for his Uncle Richard; being a hardware clerk in Memphis; serving as a communications specialist in the US Army in India, China, and Burma during World War II; managing a local New Market baseball team; farming row crops; working as a sheet metal technician at Redstone Arsenal; owning a grocery store in New Market; being a cattle farmer for many years; and serving as Sunday school superintendent and teacher at the New Market Methodist Church.
He was active in the Madison County Cattlemen's Association, New Market Lions Club, PTA, Boy Scouts, and the American Legion. In later years he frequented and enjoyed the New Market Senior Center. He enjoyed raising cattle, nature, gardening, family life, raising fox hounds, and his wife's cooking.
He died peacefully at the age of 103.
A visitation for John will be held Tuesday, August 9, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Rd Ne, Huntsville, Alabama 35811, followed by a celebration of life at 3:00 PM.
