James D. Smith Sr.

James D. Smith Sr. age 92 of Gurley, Al. passed away on Monday, March 28, 2023. He was a Private in the Army and spent his service in Germany. Upon his return to the states, JD would meet his wife and they would marry in 1954 and reside in the Gurley area for 69 years. His occupation was a mechanic on The Redstone Arsenal where he retired after 25 years of service.

JD loved Nascar Racing and he was able to be a crew member for his friend Jimmy Means at Jimmy Means Racing. After 30 plus years with the Nascar Team he retired. On February 5, 2006, JD gave his life to Christ and became a member of Pleas Mount Baptist Church in Killingsworth Cove.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years Frances S. Smith, Daughter Deborah Isbell (Rickey), two Grandsons Darrin Isbell (Natasha), Rusty Isbell (Kristy) and 7 Great Grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a Son James D. Smith Jr., his Parents Cecil and Maggie Smith, a Brother Nolan and a Sister Cordell.

Visitation for James will be held Friday, March 31, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Rd Ne, Huntsville, Alabama 35811. Following the visitation will be the celebration of life service at 1:00 PM at Valhalla Funeral Home Chapel.
