Mariamma John

Mariamma John was born in Kottarakara, India on October 15, 1947. She was the oldest child born to the late Kunjachan Ommen Vaidyan and late Kunjamma Kunjachan in Kottarakara. She had three brothers and one sister.

Mariamma John was married to Koshy P. John in 1977. In 1982, she immigrated to the United States to begin her life in Philadelphia, where she worked as a registered nurse and raised her two children, Reuben and Reena. As a faithful member of Bethel Mar Thoma Church, she was able to continue her strong faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mariamma was best described to be kind, caring, and loving, especially to her family.

Mariamma’s joy was infectious to the family as she cherished telling stories and ensuring everyone was just as happy as her. With her sense of humor and sarcasm, family events were far from being dull. Her strength was defined by her resilience in difficult times, and she was able to use her faith to persevere. As the heart and soul of our family, her smile would always lift our spirits and she will be missed.

She is survived by her husband, Koshy P. John, her daughter, Reena John, her son Reuben John, daughter in law Shirley John, and her grandsons, Nicholas, Christopher, and Brandon John. She is also survived by her siblings: Cheriyan Kunjachan, Varghese Kunjachan, Omana Solomon, and Sabu Kunjachen as well as their spouses Jainamma Cheriyan, Marykutty Varghese, Lukose Solomon, and Rajam Sabu; and lastly, her nieces and nephews: Sheena, Joseph, Sonia, Simi, David, Sam, Ashley, Sarah, and Sandra.

A visitation for Mariamma will be held Sunday, November 5, 2023 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Bethel Mar Thoma Church, 532 Levick Street, Philadelphia, PA 19111. A visitation and funeral service will occur Monday, November 6, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, 532 Levick Street, Philadelphia, PA 19111. An interment will occur Monday, November 6, 2023 at 12:15 PM at Forest Hills Cemetery, 25 Byberry Rd, Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania 19006.
