George Thoompanal Ninan (lovingly known as Georgechayan) was born on October 27, 1931 in Anjilithanam, Kaviyoor, Kerala, India. He was the second son amongst seven children born to the late Mr. Varughese Ninan and the late Mrs. Mariamma Ninan. As a young man he grew up in Anjilithanam, helping his father with his business. He acquired a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from St. Berchmans College, Changanassery, India in 1955.
In 1961, he moved to Bhopal where he worked at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited in the administrative department. The following year he married Aleyamma Poulose and together they raised five children. During his time in Bhopal, he was an active member of the St. Thomas Orthodox Church where he taught Sunday school, participated enthusiastically in all church activities, and built lifelong friendships. He had a passion for the Church, brought his children up in the Christian faith and taught them to love the Lord. He worked hard so that all his children would have a good Christian education. He always encouraged his children to pursue higher education, instilled in them good work ethics, and was very proud of their achievements.
After retirement, he moved his family back to his dear hometown of Anjilithanam, Kerala to live in his ancestral home and care for his elderly mother to whom he was deeply devoted. Whilst there, he enjoyed his retired life by pursuing his passion for agriculture on his farmlands around his home. He was actively involved in the St. Thomas Orthodox Sleeba Church, as an elder conducting prayer groups, and providing spiritual leadership. He was a blessing to his local community and has left a lasting impact in his hometown.
Family and relationships were central pillars to his life and he cherished spending time with his loved ones and celebrating life with them. He was a great big brother who doted on his brothers and sisters (Late T.N Varughese, Late Aleyamma Chacko, Late Rachel Mathew, Marykutty John, Annamma Thomas, T.N Ninan and their families). He was a caring husband, father, and grandfather. He had a zest for life. He loved to read, especially English literature, and enjoyed writing sermon notes and memoirs. He was fond of traveling to new places with his children, and would regularly visit his daughters and their families in the U.S. Even when away from his motherland, he always stayed connected with his family there and kept up with Kerala current events and politics.
He was the very definition of a gentleman - loving, caring, humble and kind hearted to all. He always led by example, blessing everyone he met with his warm smile, gentle and prayerful demeanor. He passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord on May 14th, 2022.
Though the void he left will never be filled, his wife (Aleyamma Poulose), daughters, their spouses, (Jessy & George, Jolly & Raji, Jasmine & John, Jennifer & Roque), and grandchildren (Christina, Celena, Joshua, Nicholas, Evangeline, Benjamin, Cheryl, Abigail, Jethro and Lenora) will carry on the legacy that he has blessed them with. He will be cherished, loved, and remembered forever.
