He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Cheryl Stearns, son, Stephen Stearns, daughter, Sherry (Stearns)Priest, son, Michael Bryant, four granddaughters, Alyssa, Ashley, Jessica and Brittany, six great-grandchildren, and his brothers David and Mike Stearns.
Steve was born on February 18th, 1942, in Waterloo, Iowa to his parents Merle and Lois Stearns. In 1948, Steve and his family moved to California from Grand Meadow, Minnesota where he spent the remainder of his life.
Steve was a man of many talents and accomplishments. He always put others first and never sought recognition or accolades for himself.
Steve received a B.S. degree in Organic Biology and secured a job at Shell Development Research facility. During his time there, he published ten scientific papers and holds a patent for one of his inventions, which received world-wide recognition.
After the closure of the Shell plant in Modesto, Steve moved with the company to Houston, Texas, where he travelled around the country as a Hydrogeologist.
Steve was passionate about music, particularly classical and bluegrass, and often enjoyed playing piano, banjo, and guitar.
He also enjoyed camping, fishing, reading, and learning about any and all subjects. Friends and family often referred to him as a “walking encyclopedia.” However, he was an extremely humble man and always exuded great kindness and humor.
He loved being with his family, and his greatest joy was spending time with his granddaughters.
Steve's warmth and love for his family will always be remembered by those who knew and loved him. His loss is deeply felt and he will be greatly missed by all.
A memorial service in honor of Steve will be held on April 3rd, 2023, at the Lakewood Cemetery. Visitation 10:00am to 11:00am. Service at 11:00am, and the celebration of life/ outdoor luncheon to follow.
