Michael was truly an outdoorsman with a heart of gold. He began his life in Ceres, California. He described his parents, Jim and Carol Phipps, as "the most perfect parents anyone could ever have." His childhood was full of adventure with his brothers Bill, Doug and Rob. They fished, played pranks and went hunting together. All three brothers have passed away before Michael and he has one sister, Janis, still living, whom he loved very much. His family moved to Fremont for awhile and then returned to Ceres. His dad, Jim, created River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres. The purpose was to provide wholesome family enjoyment at an affordable price. Michael has been the manager/owner for the last 7 years. Prior to this he was heavily involved in the agricultural community as a Custom Farm Manager. He thoroughly enjoyed managing 1200 acres of almonds throughout the valley. With a degree in Agriculture from Fresno State, he had relished his several years of work for International Harvestor in Texas and California.
He was truly proud of being the kindhearted and indulgent father of son Jared Phipps and daughter Kristen (married to Jeff Colwell). It would also be difficult to find a prouder grandpa of Kristen's beautiful daughters Emma and Valerie Colwell. His newest grandson is Logan, Jared's son. They were not yet able to meet each other, but Michael was proud as can be of this new little one.
Michael suffered for an extremely long time with a rare kidney disease and spent the last 2 years in and out of hospitals. He tried experimental treatments with the hope of saving future lives. Throughout this difficulty, he had a storybook marriage with his devoted wife, Kimberly. Together they tried every treatment possible and hoped for a cure. Kimberly's children, Trevor and Mary Hamer, Clay Blakeman, Ashley Thiner and Brett Thiner also offered never-ending love and support during this tumultuous time.
The Memorial with be Saturday, March 28 at 11am. It will be held at Richland Faith Assembly of God in Modesto. Pastor Herb Henry who was a "friend who sticks closer than a brother" will be officiating.
