Yaw Opoku was born on October 20, 1960 in Kumasi, Ghana, to the late Collins Opoku and Gladys Anoah. He gained admission into Opoku Ware Secondary School in 1974. In 1986, he graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology with a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Yaw immigrated to the United States and obtained a Master’s degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1995. He married Lydia, the love of his life, in 1989. He had three children, Akwasi, Kwame, and Abigail, who learned from him how to live with love, integrity, and responsibility.
Yaw loved his family and always sought to make a positive impact in his community. He served as a church deacon at River of Life Fellowship in Amarillo, TX, and later at Gloryland Assembly of God in Houston, TX. He was an active contributor to the national and Houston chapter of the Akatakyie fraternity. He worked as an electrical engineer and worked with GE, Schlumberger, Zachary Engineering, and Dow Chemical. He was a gentle, attentive, and principled man, full of wisdom and compassion.
Yaw is survived by his wife, Lydia: his daughter Abigail, his sons Akwasi and Kwame, his granddaughter Ama Pomaa, his sisters Vida Kusi and Ama Serwaa, his brothers Kwame Osei and Akwasi Berko. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Janet Fosu, and his brother Kofi Fosuhene.
