Wallace “Wally” Preston Hutchinson passed away on August 31, 2022, at his home with his wife at his side. The only child of Preston Edwin & Virgie Key Hutchinson, he was born in Austin, Texas, on June 13, 1946.
Wally graduated from Austin’s McCallum High School, 1964, Southwest Texas State University, 1970. He was a member of Texas DeMolay, Texas Legislature Page Program, McCallum Knights Band, and The Sons of the Republic of Texas.
The son of educators, Wally began his work career selling textbooks in Texas and adjacent states, followed by several years working in Houston area school district tax offices. He married in 1976, gaining 3 children to whom he was “Dad.” In 1978 Wally & his wife began a local property tax consulting business to Texas special districts until retiring.
Wally enjoyed an active life running 23 marathons around the country, numerous snow ski and scuba trips around the world, and extensive travel to 6 continents including inside the Arctic Circle. Following retirement, he and his wife lived for a time in both Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Dripping Springs, Texas, before returning to Houston to be near their children. He met the challenges & joys of life with humility as a true gentleman, even during his lengthy affliction with a rare form of neurological degeneration.
Wally was preceded in death by his beloved parents and eldest son, Christopher Gordon.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen (Fetzer); children, Robert (& Ana) Gordon and Kimberly Hutchinson; grandchildren, Angelica Gordon, Patricia Gordon, and Jordan Hutchinson; a brother-in-law, Alan (& Nancy) Fetzer and a sister-in-law, Julie (& William) Thomas; an aunt-in-law, Alice Fetzer, and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins & friends in Texas, California, Ohio, and across the country.
Visitation will be held at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas 77023, from 5pm to 8pm on Monday, September 12. Services will also be held at Forest Park Lawndale in the Chapel of the Angels at 10am on Tuesday, September 13, followed by a short graveside service at 11am.
