Daughter of a Swedish immigrant, Verla was Born in Omaha, Nebraska on April 6, 1931 and grew up on a farm in Fairmont, Michigan with her four brothers. Verla married the love of her life, William D. Roy, on July 15, 1950 and spent 46 happy years together before his passing in 1996. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill, her devoted parents Swan Edward & Lucile Carlson, and her loving brother Jack Carlson. Verla was a committed mother who loved unconditionally, and is survived by daughters Vonnie Stewart and husband Eric, Judy Montgomery Henry and husband Mike, Sharon Roy, and son Larry Roy as well as her brothers Don, Howard, and Rodger Carlson. She was a beautiful and loving Mimi to every single one of her 13 grandchildren; Shawna, Jeanette, Robyn, Travis, Justin, Chanda, Bobby, Wayne, Lindsey, Jessica, Jayme, Katelyn, Tyler and their spouses. She adored her 23 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. Some of the family’s fondest memories with her are Thanksgiving gatherings at her home, her contagious laugh and cheerfulness, football games in the backyard and summer reunions in Daytona Beach. Verla’s kindness and perseverance were examples to all, and she taught us to be loyal, hardworking, and loving to everyone.
Verla worked for Hettig Kahn Management for 37 years, forming bonds and friendships she deeply cherished. Verla retired in September 2017. Verla was a past Worthy Matron of Fairbanks Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and member of the Cypress and Bellaire Chapters for 57 years, beginning her service in Grants, New Mexico.
A private family viewing was held on Thursday evening and a funeral service celebrating her life began at 1:00 pm on Friday, October 6, 2017 at Verla’s home church, Terrace United Methodist Church, at 1203 Wirt Road in Houston, Texas. The family welcomed everyone to gather to celebrate Verla’s life in a post reception at the church.

A private family interment was held at Houston National Cemetery where Verla was laid to rest with her husband.
