Thomas M. Even, 74, of Houston, Texas, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, the 16th of July 2010. Tom was a graduate of South Dakota State University, after which he served his country in the U.S. Army. Tom was a Professional Engineer with numerous years in the oil and gas industry. He was also a world-renowned metallurgist and pipeline welding specialist.
Tom was preceded in death by parents A. J. and Edith Even of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is survived by his wife, Linda; son, Dan Even; daughter Joan Southard and husband Mike, and Mary Volf and husband Keith; and step-daughter, Catherine Wentworth and husband Greg Israel. He was blessed with six grandchildren; Justin, James and Melissa Southard, and Ellia, Jane and Vincent Volf. He is also survived by brothers, Jim, Bill, Don and Charlie Even; and sisters, Nancy Long, Judy Lyzenga, Barbara Chavez, Virginia DePertius and Elizabeth Even.
Tom’s passions in life were reading, the constant pursuit of knowledge, and drawing. He was an avid golfer who also enjoyed playing tennis, following sports of all types, including college and professional football, golf, and baseball.
Tom’s life was one rooted in quiet philanthropy. He was a patient, kind, and humble individual who enjoyed spending time with his beloved grandchildren. He was greatly admired in the professional community, very loved by his family and friends, and will be deeply missed by all.
A memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 19th of July, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
