SHIRLEY ANNE GEORGE, affectionately known as "Mimo," passed away on Wednesday, the 11th of September 2013, in Houston. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Shirley was born on the 15th of May 1925, in Los Angeles and was raised in Oregon. She graduated from Oregon State University and was a lifelong member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She married Lee David George on the 30th of June 1946, and together they raised five children. Shirley and Lee moved to Houston after Lee's military service and together they started George Consolidated, Inc. Shirley was an avid golfer and she and Lee were longtime members of BraeBurn Country Club, the Houston Racquet Club, New Orleans Country Club, and the Petroleum Club. The family spent entire summers in Rockport, Texas at the beloved George Family Compound where Shirley loved deep sea fishing, water skiing, and floating on the bay. She also enjoyed hunting at the family deer lease in Junction, Texas. Especially important to her was celebrating holidays and birthdays surrounded by family and friends. Shirley spent countless hours doing volunteer work for the American Heart Association. She was a former President of the BraeBurn Women's Golf Association as well as a Board Member of the American Cancer Society Ladies Golf Classic. She loved to fly and obtained her private pilot’s license. Shirley was also a member of St Luke's United Methodist Church in Houston.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Harry "Irish" Bailey and Lyrl Hansen Bailey; husband Lee David George; and son-in-law Chris Shepherd. She is survived by her children: son, David George; daughters, Diana George and husband Dan Mitchell, Jennifer George and Michael Heffernan, Suzanne George, Laura Wendell and husband, Wayde Wendell; ten grandchildren and one great-grand daughter, Jessica Smith, Kelly Smith and husband, Bryan Maddux, Ryan Smith, Shawn Smith, Stephanie George and daughter, Jackie, Lauren George, Natalie Shepherd, Collin Shepherd, Katy Wendell and William Wendell. She is also survived by nieces Melissa Hardy, Madeleine Mason, and Alexandra Hardy and their children.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation for the compassionate care Shirley received from her physicians and caregiver, Annie Benton, during the last few months of her life. Their dedication and attention made her condition much more comfortable.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from half-past twelve o’clock until half-past one o’clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 16th of September, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The funeral service is to be conducted at half-past one o’clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 16th of September, also in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, where Rev. Justin Coleman of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, is to officiate.
An interment service is to follow, via an escorted cortege, at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family kindly suggests contributions be directed in Shirley’s name to Shirley's memory to Victory Houston - American Cancer Society, 6301 Richmond Avenue, Houston, TX 77057.
