Shirley Jean Burgess

Shirley Jean Burgess, 84, of Port Byron NY passed away peacefully, Friday, August 25th, in Katy, Texas, with her family by her side. Shirley was born on April 14,1938 to the late Jim and Irene Farrell. Her siblings include Jim (Tina) and Bob (Lorraine) Farrell of Auburn and Nancy (Ed) Pisano of Julian Ca.

Shirley graduated from Port Byron High School in 1956 and married her high school sweetheart Richard (Dick) Burgess in 1957. Prior to Dick’s passing in 2017, the couple had been married almost 60 years. While Shirley and Dick moved several times over the course of their marriage Shirley always considered Central New York to be home and had many fond memories of growing up in and around the Port Byron area. Prior to going to live with her son in Katy Texas, Shirley was active in her church, First United Methodist Church of Port Byron and the Port Byron Senior Citizens. Her legendary potato salad will be missed by many.

Shirley is survived by her 4 children; Richard F. Burgess Jr, Yardley D. Burgess, Debbie Anne Burgess and Dawn Reilley (Mark Reilley), 4 grandchildren Mary Bugaj, Yardley Burgess Jr. (Jessica), Robert Leo Adams and Erin Reilley as well as 4 great grandchildren Christopher, Ella and Chloe Burgess and Emily Bugaj.

Shirley will be laid to rest with her husband Dick at the Houston V.A. National Cemetery on Monday, September 12,2022. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:30pm with a grave service to follow. Shirley will be remembered in prayer at the First United Methodist Church of Port Byron. Sunday, September 25th at 11:00am.
