He was youngest son to a hard-working father, and exceptional mother. He would often discuss his pride in his parents, including his father’s love of classic USA-made automobiles. If Bob ever told you the difference between a 67, and 69 Chevrolet Corvette, it was because his father taught him. Bob’s parents were unique in their views on life. Life-long and dedicated members of their church, they similarly taught Bob that life in all aspects was beautiful and worthy of love. Bob graduated high school in Orange, Texas, and excelled as an athlete. Following that graduation, after a brief stint playing football at junior college, he enrolled in The University of Texas at Austin. It was there he began to cultivate two of his great passions: (1) beauty; and (2) University of Texas Football.
Bob majored in English in college, focusing on his admiration for the beauty and poise of the written word. Yeats, he would often say, was his favorite poet. Not to be overshadowed by the alternative greats: Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, Leonard Cohen, or Larry McMurtry. Where some fathers read their children bedtime stories, Bob taught his son poetry before bed each night.
Bob was a celebrated actor in College Theater, his teachers choosing plays for him to lead with his strong, heroic presence. He spent years supporting the Alley Theatre in Houston, and loved seeing Edward Albee, Peter Schaffer, Tennessee Williams, Shakespeare, and Andrew Lloyd Weber.
After graduating college, Bob attended law school, also at The University of Texas. Bob took well to the study of law, when not spending time at Barton Springs, taking in the beauty that place had to offer. He graduated in 1978, with highest honors.
Bob’s career took twists and turns. He was, to wide acknowledgment, a tremendous lawyer. Known for his skill, knowledge, passion, ethics, and courtroom gravitas. He began his career with Baker and Botts, and after leaving there worked for some of the best firms with the best lawyers in the practice. He ultimately formed Robert D. Green & Associates, continuing to join with exceptional lawyers, leading finally to the formation of Green, Klein, Wood & Jones.
Bob’s sense of justice in the face of great adversaries inspired his work and his chivalric code for life. He dubbed himself and his partners “Dragonslayers,” proud to champion individuals being taken advantage of by large corporations in first-party insurance cases.
Bob’s life was spent in pursuit of joy. Whether that joy be found in beauty, in words, in song, in his turquoise 1956 thunderbird, in food, in laughter, or in his zealous advocacy. Bob loved deeply and passionately. He spent his life dedicated to others, as a friend, father, husband, mentor, teacher, or advocate. He loved aggressively, without barriers or borders, and could find beauty in all parts of life.
Bob’s love and optimism overcame obstacles that would have defeated a lesser man. He told his wife Tatiana in recent times that the last two years were the best of his life. Even through the agony of chemotherapy and cancer, Bob found joy in every day, something to love in every person, and glory in every challenge.
Bob’s legacy will continue. He will live on not only in those who knew him, but in the passions we continue to pursue. His heart knew no limit, and the depths of him were unfathomable.
O but there is wisdom
In what the sages said;
But stretch that body for a while
And lay down that head
Till I have told the sages
Where man is comforted
How could passion run so deep
Had I never thought
That the crime of being born
Blackens all our lot?
But where the crime’s committed
The crime can be forgot
-WB Yeats.
