Reverend Ireland Brown, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away Monday, October 7, 2024, at the age of 96, in Houston, TX.
Reverend Brown was born in Luling, Texas on September 17, 1928, to Lonnie O. and Willie Edna Brown. He graduated from Wheatley High School in San Antonio, TX., and enjoyed playing basketball and running track. While at Wheatley, he received a Merit Award from the Athletic Association. While attending
St. Philip’s College, he received several awards for outstanding ability in basketball.
During his service to this nation in the military, he was awarded the All-Army Sports Program Certificate of Accomplishment for his outstanding ability in track and field. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army on August 9, 1954.
In 1960, he heard the call of God into the ministry. In 1964 he graduated from Guadalupe Baptist Seminary with a Bachelor of Theology Degree. He preached his first sermon at Antioch Baptist church, in San Antonio, TX. The family moved to Houston, TX. in 1972.
In his service to the Lord, Rev. Brown was a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school Superintendent, and Mission Department teacher. He also served as an assistant pastor in two churches. He was a faithful member at Creston Missionary Baptist Church since 1981 and was a Senior Minister there.
Rev. Brown was preceded in death by his parents, his 3 brothers, Robert, Franklin, and Odis, and his sister Saloma Duffey.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Bertha, his daughter Irelanette Broadnax and her husband, David, his step-son, Richard Jones and his wife Patricia, his sister Juanita Stimpson, 4 grandsons, Brandon Broadnax, Gamal Jones, Sherif Jones, and Sidri Jones, 12 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and 6 nieces, Janice Allen, Patricia Brown, Cynthia Brown, Felicia Meyers, Debra Brown, Janet Hurt, and their families.
