Ray was born on the 12th of November 1940 to George Knight Taggart, Jr. and Ethleen (Reimers) Taggart, joining her beloved older brother, George Knight Taggart III (Dana). The two siblings enjoyed an idyllic childhood with their loving parents in Taft, Texas, before the family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where Ray graduated early from W.B. Ray High School. Ray attended Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia before attending the University of Texas at Austin in its Plan II Honors Program. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In later life, she earned a master’s in social work at the University of Houston.
Ray is preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Raymond Lee Chilton.
She is survived by her children with former husband, G. Cole Thomson: Cole Thomson and his wife Cheryl, Katherine (Thomson) Glass and her husband Ethan, and Linda Thomson. She is also survived by her beloved stepsons Lee Chilton and Gene Chilton and his wife Jeni, as well as grandchildren Christopher Chilton and his wife Brianna, Bryce Chilton, Shannon (Chilton) Allert and husband Chase, Diana Thomson, Cole Thomson, Jr., Daniel Chilton, Marley Chilton, Will Glass, and Charlie Glass and great grandchildren Emerson Chilton and Bearant James Allert. She is also survived by her brother George and his wife Dana, nephews Nathan Taggart and his wife Blaire, Wade Taggart, and niece Claire (Taggart) McNamara and her husband Michael, as well as by their children Lauren (Taggart) Danz and her husband Noah, Luke Taggart his wife Bethany, Michael McNamara, Jr., and Madeline McNamara. She is also survived by her good friend Clark McCleary and his family, whom she loved like her own.
Ray was a beautiful and gracious woman with many treasured lifelong friends, a talented, prize-winning photographer, and a generous benefactor to many charities. She was an active member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church, where she was a Stephen Minister, the River Oaks Garden Club, and the Junior League. She spent many happy days with family and friends at Salty Pines in Rockport, Texas. She enjoyed her lifelong habit of early-morning walks in Memorial Park in Houston. She loved flowers of all sorts, photography, spending time with friends, and the Chapelwood community. She loved her family fiercely.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family on Friday, the 26th of April from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening in the grand foyer and library of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A funeral service is to be conducted on Saturday, the 27th of April at ten o’clock in the morning in the chapel at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay Street in Houston, where Matt Russell Executive Pastor is to officiate.
