Patricia “Pat” Joanne Suttle Gill of Houston, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, the 8th of August 2024, to be with her Lord and Savior. She was 94 years of age. Pat was born on the 29th of May 1930, in Wichita, Kansas to Charles Madison and Vida Alice (Baum) Suttle. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe Gill, her brother Charles A. Suttle, and his wife Agnes Suttle.
As a young child, Pat moved to Oklahoma City, OK where her parents owned and operated Suttle Construction, a general contracting firm. She played the piano, and flute in her high school marching band. Pat graduated from Central High School in 1948 and went on to graduate from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in business. She was one of the only women in the business department and was also a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
After college, Pat worked for the family construction business before marrying Joe Gill in Oklahoma City, OK on the 7th of February 1954. Pat and Joe – who were married for 49 years - raised their two children, Patsy and Ron, in Oklahoma City, OK, and Littleton, CO, before retiring in Houston, TX.
Pat has always been involved in leadership: she was active in her high school band, college sorority, and the OKC chapter of Land Wives. She was also a homeroom mother for her children, a leader in both Boy and Girl Scouts, a Sunday School teacher, and a Sunday School Social Director.
Pat loved playing bridge - which she played consistently for over 80 years! After becoming a widow, Pat learned how to use technology and would regularly play bridge on her iPad (when she wasn’t playing with her friends). As her children and grandchildren will attest, “Nonie” was competitive and sharp enough to beat them at most games -- well into her nineties! Pat suffered from F.O.M.O. (fear of missing out), and never wanted to miss a family event. She loved to travel and saw much of the world. Pat was an excellent baker and seamstress and even made her own hats in the 60’s! She also enjoyed bowling, water aerobics, and was an enthusiastic line-dancer.
At the age of 38, Pat was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). She never complained about her physical challenges and hid them well from most people. Pat was an active member of First Baptist Church in OKC, OK, Riverside Baptist Church in Denver, CO, and Second Baptist Church in Houston, TX.
Pat loved the Lord and modeled how to be “a woman of noble character” (Proverbs 31: 10-31). Her favorite Bible verse was the J.B. Phillips New Testament translation of Romans 12:2b: Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould but let God re-mould your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity. Pat’s faith in the Lord began at an early age, and she had a special relationship with her Lord and Savior. Pat’s sweet spirit was a blessing to everyone she met.
Pat is survived by her daughter, Patsy Smith (Bill Paskey Jr.) of Campton Hills, IL; her son, Ronald Gill of Denver, CO; her grandchildren, Brandon Smith (Whitney Bernhardt), Laura Morgan (Lt. Col Robert Morgan Jr), Taylor Smith, and step-grandchildren Will Paskey and Bailey Horn (Mitch Horn). She is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Asher Morgan, Macy Morgan, Micah Morgan, Riley Morgan, and Isla Smith, in addition to one step-granddaughter, Avery Paskey, and many nieces and nephews. Pat was anxiously waiting to meet her seventh great-grandchild, a boy due to arrive in November to Brandon and Whitney.
A Celebration of Pat’s Life is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 16th of August in the Hankamer Chapel of Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway in Houston, where the Rev. Lee Maxcy is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the Deacon’s Parlor.
The interment is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 17th of August at Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to the Winning Walk Ministry, c/o Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway, Houston, TX 77057.
