Orey M. Patin

Orey Mack “Pat” Patin, 91, passed away on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at his home in Richmond, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, August 28, 2010 in the Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 12 Noon to 1 PM in the Earthman reception parlor with a light buffet lunch to be served. A graveside service and committal will follow in Woodlawn Garden of Memories.

Orey was born in Port Arthur, TX on July 3, 1919 to parents Jean Baptiste Patin and Emeranthe Melancon and was the fifth son of a fifth son. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur in 1937. He was taught carpentry by his father and used his hands to build things his whole life. But his real talent was putting words to paper. He was an avid reader and collector of poems and prose. He could also be found on the golf course most weekends or decoupaging furniture and other objects of art for his friends and family, smoking a good cigar all the while.

Orey worked for the Port Arthur News in Port Arthur, TX before moving to Houston, TX in the early 50’s with his wife, Maureen Spell Patin of Port Arthur. He accepted a position in the Display Advertising Dept. of The Houston Chronicle. He retired as the General Advertising Manager of the Chronicle after thirty-six years.

Orey was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; his first wife, Maureen; and second wife, Lillian Gayhart Patin. He is survived by his daughter, Kimmi Patin Logan and husband J. P. Logan, Jr.; his son, Patrick Orey Patin and wife Sharon Zachry Patin; his grandson, J. P. Logan, III and wife Stacy Carraro Logan; and grandchildren, Bryant Logan, Matthew, Dylan and Haley Patin; and his great-grandchild, Portia Kayes; step grandson Ryan Zachry; many loving stepchildren and step grandchildren in the Gayhart family including his stepdaughter, Sharon Gayhart Schoelkopf and step granddaughter, Lauren Schoelkopf; and many other friends and family members.

Daddy, PawPaw, and Uncle, you were loved and respected by everyone who met you and you will always be remembered for your kindness and for your great humor. You will be missed so very much! Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
