Norma Jean Rodgers Powell, 83, of Houston, TX passed away on October 23, 2013. She was born February 5, 1930 in Galena Park, TX to Holland V. Rodgers and Christine A. Rodgers. Norma is survived by her two younger sisters, Wynelle Rodgers of Toronto, Canada and Pawne Blomquist of Columbus, TX. She is survived by her eldest son, William C. Powell of Houston; her daughter, Melodie Smith of Dallas; her five grandchildren, Caroline Pape of Houston, William B. Powell of Houston, Jeremiah Powell of Houston, Charles (Chas) Smith of Dallas, and Sarah Smith of Dallas; and one great grandchild, Asher Pape of Houston.
Norma is preceded in death by her parents, Holland and Christine Rodgers, her ex-husband Billy C. Powell; her sisters Bobbie Rumph and Johnie Miller and her son John Powell.
Norma was the eldest of five sisters. She attended school in Galena Park and graduated in 1948. She went on to Rice University where she received a Bachelor in Business Administration then she received her Masters in Business Administration at the University of Houston in 1954. Upon graduation she entered the teaching field and taught math at the high school level for many years. She was an accomplished piano player and chorale member. She played the piano and then the organ for many years at Galena Park Baptist Church. She also played the piano and sang in the church choir at South Main Baptist in Houston.
Norma continually read on all subjects especially gardening and education. She will be missed by all and thankful that she lived a long full life. Funeral services will be held October 30, 2013 at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home, 13102 North Freeway, Houston, TX 77060, 281-443-0063.
