Michael known as Mike graduated from Penn High School and received a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration at Indiana Institute of Technology. He served in the army from 1981 to 1987 as ADA Operations Intelligence Assistance, rank specialist, fourth class. Followed by an additional three years with a national guard. He received the following metals: Army Achievement, Good Conduct, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Hand Grenade and Sharp Shooter, and M-16 Rifle Marksman. Mike later met the love of his life, Marlene in West Palm Beach, Florida and married on March 30, 1996. Mike worked in technology at Amazon for multiple years. He had a passion for vintage cars, Basset Hounds, dogs in general and military history. Mike was a founder and owner of Kingwood Nuts and Treats, specializing in Glazed Cinnamon Sugar roasted pecans, cashews, and almonds.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Nancy Russ; grandparents, Marion and Madeline Russ, Robert and Bernice Shilt; aunts, Virginia Athey, and Lindia Denny.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marlene Russ; daughter, Karen Denny from Indianapolis; sister, Leslie Marvel husband Ron from Waco, Texas; brother, Brian Russ from Mishawaka Indiana; sister-in-law, Diane Vanheste; brother-in-law, Dan Vanheste wife Cindy; Uncle, Jack Shilt wife Mariellen; Aunt, Cynthia Wadsworth; niece, Ashley Moore husband Brian; nephew, Brett Marvel wife Elizabeth; multiple cousins, Debbie Hoyt husband Steve, Jordan and Morgan Hoyt, Todd Shilt wife Tami, Raygen, Riley, Ryan Shilt, Craig Denny wife Amy, Braden and Connor Denny.
Serving as pallbearers are Brian Russ, Ron Marvel, Brett Marvel, Steve Hoyt, Craig Denny, Jack Shilt.
In Lieu of Flowers donations may be made to Wreaths Across America Houston, and K9 Wounded Warrior Project.
A special thanks to the very special team at HCA Healthcare Kingwood Hospital. To all the nurses Miranda, Alice, Adam, Tara , Julie, and Dwayne. As well as Dr. Sarva, Dr. CAO and all the interns of the ICU stroke unit on the fifth floor. They are one of the most compassionate and caring teams the family has met.
A visitation for Michael will be held Friday, June 14, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039. A second visitation will occur Saturday, June 15, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, in the Family Chapel at Brookside; followed by a funeral service beginning promptly at 11:30 AM.
