Dr. Matias Miranda, beloved husband, father, grandfather and physician of Houston, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, the 18th of October 2011, at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital after a prolonged stay in the hospital. He was born in Lima, Peru on the 2nd of March 1927 to Matias Miranda Prada and Domitila Miranda. He married Lastenia Del Mar on the 6th of January 1951. He completed medical education at San Marcos University in Lima, Peru and served as a medical doctor for the Peruvian Armed Forces, earning the rank of Major.
Following the death of his father, he left Peru to pursue postgraduate training in cardiac surgery at the Montreal Heart Institute, University of Montreal, under the mentorship of famed Canadian cardiac surgeon, Dr. Pierre Grondin, who performed the first heart transplant in Canada. Thereafter, he received specialty training in Anesthesiology at the Royal Victoria Hospital, McGill University, in Montreal. In 1971, he immigrated to Houston to assume the position of Chief Anesthesiologist at St. Johns Hospital in Clear Lake and later joined the medical staff of Twelve Oaks Hospital in Houston as the Chief of Anesthesiology until his retirement in 2006.
He enjoyed playing tennis, swimming, going to Rockets games, spending time with and traveling the world with his family. He had a love of fast cars, antique timepieces and his model car collection. He was a gifted doctor that was a member of the American Medical Association and blessed to practice medicine for 50 years until the age of 79.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lastenia Miranda; daughter, Carmen Reuben and husband Dr. James M. Reuben; daughter, Giovana Price; grandson, Jason Matias Reuben and wife Libby Reuben; granddaughter, Dr. Jessica C. Reuben and spouse Dr. Sean Revell; grandsons, Dr. Michael Miranda and Matthew Miranda; granddaughter, Ashley Miranda; great granddaughter, Violet Revell; and great grandson, Kane Miranda.
He is preceded in death by his beloved son Dr. Victor Miranda and son-in-law Skip Price.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six until half-past eight o’clock in the evening on Sunday, the 23rd of October, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The funeral mass is to be offered at eleven o’clock in the morning on Monday, the 24th of October, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc in Houston, where the Rev. Victor Perez, Parochial Vicar, will officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Parish Hall.
Following the reception, the family is to gather for a private entombment in the Chapel of the Oaks Mausoleum at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
