Margie was born on January 3, 1923, in the Houston Heights to Scottish immigrants, Margaret Mackay and Jack E. Gray. She was a Reagan High School Redcoat, graduating with the class of 1939, and matriculated that same year at the University of Houston with the first class to attend classes at the “new” location. While her university studies were interrupted, she later returned and graduated from U of H, class of 1961, with a Bachelor of Science in Education.
For over 20 years she taught second grade at Fisher Elementary School in Pasadena, Texas. She was focused on discerning the best way to reach each child, once cutting out letters from sandpaper for a tactile learner.
Margie was always curious: in high school she set up a laboratory with a microscope in the garage. She was a lifelong reader, and played a mean game of Scrabble. She was up early to garden – weeding after she was legally blind “by feel” wearing thin latex gloves, and was into native plant gardening before the rest of us knew the term.
On November 28, 1941, Margie married Estis D. Lander. They built their first home in Forest Hill, where they raised their daughter Susan, and later lived for many years in Glenbrook Valley. Upon their retirement to Pecan Grove, in Richmond, Texas, Marjorie became an active member, serving as President, of the Pecan Grove Garden Club. She and Estis explored the world together and enjoyed maintaining lifelong friendships with Heights and Reagan friends, the Sunday School class from their Forest Hill days, and teaching colleagues from Pasadena ISD.
Margie was predeceased by her beloved husband of 70 years, Estis D. Lander and by their precious daughter, Susan Lander Ray and son-in-law, Simpson Ray II, as well as her parents, brother, Jack E. Gray Jr. , and sister, Elizabeth Gray Robinson. She is survived by her nieces and nephew, Sally Robinson M.D., Nancy Robinson Lomax, John Robinson, and Peggy Robinson, as well as a host of Lander cousins.
Margie and Estis are indebted to Carolyn Campbell for her many years of friendship, prayers, and service.
Margie was a loving, intelligent, and creative wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, teacher, and friend.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, February 2, 2014 at Heights Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held in Glenwood Cemetery, 2525 Washington Ave., Houston, Texas 77007, on Monday, February 3, 2014 at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, Marjorie would prefer a donation to a charity of your choice.
