Lydia Nero

On Wednesday, January 8, 2020, Lydia Nero, aged 85, passed away peacefully in her sleep in Houston, Texas. Lydia was born on August 9, 1934 to Pascal and Lorenia Nero in Church Point, LA and was one of nine children, eight girls and one boy.

She was baptized and confirmed at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, in Church Point.

In 1955 the Nero family relocated to Lake Charles, LA where Lydia completed her high school education at Washington High School. In 1960 Lydia relocated to Houston, Texas. While living in Houston, Lydia began what would become her lifelong career in the field of nursing at a brand-new hospital opened in May of 1963, the Ben Taub Hospital. She later attended San Jacinto Jr. College where she received her LVN license. She later attended Prairie View A & M and Texas Women University to receive her RN degree and a Masters in nursing, respectively. She worked at several hospitals in the Houston area. Her dedication to nursing took her abroad where she spent two years in Saudi Arabia in the nursing field. To her peers, colleagues and family, Lydia was a very dedicated and caring nurse who later went on to teach the skills she had learned. The last 10 years of her working career were spent teaching nursing at Prairie View A & M University in the medical center.

She was a dedicated member of Assumption Catholic Church. She participated in many of her church’s activities. She was a CCE teacher and a Eucharistic minister. She was also in the choir for a time. Lydia was dedicated to share the New Goods of the Lord with her firm and unwavering faith in God and Christ.

Lydia was also a wonderful cook who loved to bake as well. Among her many recipes her most memorable specialties were turkey wings, prune cakes, and ginger muffins. Many family members looked forward to enjoying her sweets at family gatherings and receiving these baked goodies as Christmas gifts.

Lydia loved to travel and visited many of the countries in Europe, England and of course the Holy Land, which she visited several times.

Lydia was preceded in death by her parents, Pascal and Lorenia Nero, her brother Bernard (Murphy), and three sisters, Letha Boutte, Wilanna Landry, and Catherine Nero.

She leaves to cherish her memory 4 sisters: Bernadette Declouette (Elridge) of Lake Charles, LA, Nelma Fontenette (James) of Newbury Park, CA, Beatrice Payton, of Upland CA, and Helen Jones, of Houston TX. She also leaves to cherish her memory two Godchildren and nephews, Joseph (Randy) Chavis and Vincent Jones, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, former students, and friends.
