Kathleen was born on October 27, 1930, in Orange, New Jersey, but grew up in Washington, D.C. She attended Immaculata Preparatory School and later Kean University.
After her parents Howard and Kathryn Sullivan died when she was a teenager, Kathleen moved to New Jersey to live with an aunt and uncle. She worked for Prudential Insurance and met John Kuzik on a blind date. They married on June 15, 1957, and had two girls, Eileen and Maureen.
The family moved to Houston in 1972 following John’s job transfer. They joined St. John Vianney Catholic Church where Kathleen volunteered in different ministries well into her 80’s. She also was an active volunteer in the Charity Guild of Catholic Women and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Kathleen enjoyed playing bridge, hosting countless dinner parties, welcoming her children’s friends and others into their home, and singing Irish tunes. She also was a devoted Astros fan and was thrilled when she got “to run the bases” one Mother’s Day during a home game.
Kathleen was an optimist and lived life to its fullest. God always was her alpha and omega, however, and she stressed the importance of faith, love, and charity to Eileen and Maureen. Over the years, Kathleen and John established wonderful friendships, and she no doubt is enjoying many reunions in heaven with those who predeceased her.
Kathleen is survived by her daughters Eileen (Richard) Wilson and Maureen Kuzik McCutchen and her “adopted daughter” Betsy (Dan) Kamin. Kathleen is also survived by her brother Jake (Robin) Sullivan and numerous nieces and nephews and their spouses and children. Kathleen was preceded in death by John (1997), her sisters Patricia Corbitt and Nancy (Robert) Cahill, and John’s eight brothers and sisters.
The Kuzik family would like to thank the workers at Parkway Place for their guidance and friendship during the years following Hurricane Harvey as well as the staff at The Reserve at Braeswood Memory Care for their encouragement, laughter, and love over the past year. Special thanks also must be given to Kathleen’s earth angels and dear friends Sandy Lovoi and Mary Grace Hume who helped get her to Mass each Sunday and to breakfast afterwards and who otherwise supported her during her long journey with dementia.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, Texas 77079, with a reception to follow.
Your love, friendship, and support have been Kathleen’s greatest gift. Nothing else is necessary. If you must, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Kathleen’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148, the Charity Guild of Catholic Women, 1203 Lovett Boulevard, Houston, TX 77006, or St. John Vianney Catholic Church.
