May 2, 1941 – July 10, 2024
Judy was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Leslie LeRoy & Louise Boone Hogue on May 2, 1941 and passed away in Houston on July 10, 2024. She was a direct descendent of Daniel Boone through his son, Nathan Boone. Upon graduation from North Kansas City High School in 1959, she attended Metro Business College in Rolla, Missouri and worked at IBM before moving to Houston. She met her future husband, Tom, here and they were married for 41 years until his death in 2007. Judy was a member of the Canterbury Methodist church until they merged with the congregation of the First United Methodist Church at Westchase. She was a good Christian, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her family.
When her youngest son was in middle school, she started working as a crossing guard for the Alief School District and worked there for 40 years. After briefly working in that position, she was promoted to supervisor for the district’s crossing guards. Judy stated quite frequently that retirement wasn’t for her and, subsequently, became one of the oldest employees of the school district. In 2022, she was finally ready for retirement.
Judy was a homemaker and raising 4 children but found the time to give back to the community. She worked part-time as a Dispatcher for the Alief Volunteer Fire Dept. and was Red Cross certified in first aid. She was a volunteer board member for the Catalina Square Assn. and managed the association’s swimming pool. She encouraged her children to learn how to swim and they all became avid swimmers. Judy was actively involved in her children’s lives on many levels and another position she held was President of the Alief-Hastings Band Boosters. When election time came around, she volunteered as an Election Official for many years. In her later years through her oldest son, she was a friend to the Houston running community by volunteering for the Bayou City Classic 10k race. She was either at the t-shirt tent or supervising the sponsor’s tent at the race site. Judy enjoyed working with youth groups from her church, her children’s schools and the Boy Scouts.
Her enthusiasm for scouting was well known. Judy began as a Cub Scout leader and later became a tireless volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America. Until her husband’s death, Judy spent nearly every summer in charge of The Outpost at the El Rancho Cima Boy Scout camp. She and her husband both took part in volunteering at many Boy Scout events. In fact, Judy was awarded the Silver Beaver Award by the Sam Houston Council of the BSA, which is an award given to those who perform community service through hard work, self-sacrifice, dedication and many years of service.
Judy loved roses of all varieties but especially loved yellow roses, which Tom would give to her on her birthday and anniversary. She had quite a few rose bushes in the front yard and was very proud of them. She also loved the many parakeets she had over the years and enjoyed watching the hummingbirds that would come to her feeders in the backyard. She was an avid Astros fan and, when she could, especially liked going to their games. However, she also held a soft spot for the Royals.
Judy is survived by her three sons and their wives; Joe & Hope Sellers, Daniel & Birgit Sellers, Thomas & Margaret Sellers; and her daughter, Margaret (Magie) Scott. Six grandchildren, Jessica Salinas & husband Rey, Joshua Sellers & wife Brittany, Mark Keppler Sellers & wife Lydia, Corey Scott, Nathaniel & wife Daya Scott and Sabrina Sellers. Eight great grandchildren, Kyle, J.D., Ayden, Luke, Alyssa, Violette, Alexis and Michael. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Sellers, and parents, Leslie LeRoy & Louise Boone Hogue.
Judy will be missed by everyone who knew her and a Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Camping Services Division or the First United Methodist Church at Westchase.
