First Lady Pastor Joyce Elizabeth (Rhodes) Walker, also lovingly known as Pastor Joyce, was born on December 28, 1942, to the late Mr. Jessie Rhodes and Mrs. Esther Mae Johnson Rhodes. She was the oldest of 10 children. First Lady Pastor Joyce was born in Columbus, Texas but grew up in Glidden, Texas, with her siblings and parents.
First Lady Pastor Joyce met her lifetime love, Pastor Oscar Eugene Walker, in San Antonio, Texas, at 20 and 21, respectively. It was a true love affair between two best friends that were married on September 4, 1965, at Olive Branch Baptist Church in Glidden, Texas. During these years, the couple had three daughters, Dwandye, Denise and Diana.
First Lady Pastor Joyce left an indelible mark on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a woman of excellence and high standards, a sharp dresser, determined, a dreamer, intelligent and a fantastic cook! But even more importantly, she was dedicated to family, and had a caring nature. Her love for her family was in everything she did.
She began her professional career as a licensed vocational nurse in 1963. After that, she earned an Associates' degree in Nursing from San Antonio College on May 20, 1972, and passed the Texas State Board to become a Registered Nurse (RN). She served as a RN for more than 40 years. She then stepped into full-time ministry with her husband, Pastor Oscar Walker in 2000.
As a mighty servant of God, First Lady Pastor Joyce served in many capacities at the churches she served. She was more than a First Lady. First Lady Pastor Joyce was a walking testimony. She handled her responsibilities with grace and ease. She was also a mentor to many women inside and outside of the church. Her anointing was so strong, and many men and women gravitated to her.
First Lady Pastor Joyce leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Pastor Oscar Walker and daughters Dwandye Porter, Denise McLean and Diana Walker. She leaves her siblings Jerry Lott, Jesse Jones, Judy Wesley, Jean Patrick, James Rhodes, Jerome Rhodes and Jeffery Rhodes (deceased Jimmy and Johnny Rhodes). Her son-in-law Karl McLean. Her grandchildren Candice Forrest, Jeffrey Forrest (husband), Kyle Porter, Samantha Porter (wife), Kayla Saborio and Zachary McLean. Her great-grandchildren, Azailiah Porter, Kaylee Porter, Jaden Forrest and Janiyah Porter. She leaves many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, church members, and friends who will dearly miss her.
