Josephine P. Tittsworth

Josephine had struggled for many years with several different illnesses and in the end she died of congestive heart failure.

Josephine was raised in Pasadena and graduated from Sam Rayburn High School in 1969. She worked a variety of jobs before deciding to join the Coast Guard in the early 70’s. She received an honorable discharge from the service after several years and went to work for IBM. After receiving a medical retirement from IBM in her early 50’s she decided to return to school and that became her new job. In the ensuing years she graduated from San Jacinto Junior College and moved on to U of H Clear Lake where she earned her Bachelors and Masters of social work. There was a summer semester that she attended Humboldt University in Humboldt, California and she loved that university and that town. She often said she would like to have lived there (she was a hippy at heart) She also began work on her PhD at the main UH campus. She was a staunch advocate for inclusion and equity and worked tirelessly to get student non-discrimination acts passed in as many universities as she could with great success.

To her family Josephine was always there to offer unconditional love. She was kind and forgave easily and was always there if she was needed. Her favorite pastime was fishing with her grandsons. She loved camping and would take her little RV on trips with one or several of her grandsons and thoroughly enjoyed the time. In her healthier days she loved dancing and was quite good at it. In her teenage years she danced on the Larry Kane Show and a show called IT that actually called her and invited her to participate as one of their featured dancers.

Josephine was outgoing, loud, boisterous, and totally uninhibited. Her personality was as big as the outdoors and she never met a stranger. You always knew as soon as Josephine entered the room because her personality took over the room. Josephine was a very kind person and was always concerned with those around her. She will be greatly missed.

She leaves to mourn her passing her much adored daughters Mandy Sawyer and Ashley Tittsworth, her sister and best friend Bonnell Templet, five grandsons (Landon, Kevin, Jacob, Blake, and Eli), two nieces and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Services will take place on Thursday, July 25th at Forest Park Lawndale. Visitation will be from 10 AM to Noon. The service will be noon to 1:30 and graveside services will be at 2 PM. For those wishing to make a donation in lieu of flowers there is a Josephine Tittsworth Scholarship at University of Houston Clear Lake. Also the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association would be good choices as well.
