John William Vanden Bos, 73, of Houston, formerly of Lake Jackson, passed away December 31, 2011 after a brief illness. He was born on January 28, 1938 in Holland, MI to Gerrit and Lura Vanden Bos. He graduated from the University of Michigan before marrying his wife Joan in Holland on June 15, 1961.
He enjoyed his time as a Holland patrolman, a NASA operations engineer during the Apollo missions, a Dow project engineer, and in the Brazoria County Office of Emergency Management. He was a ham radio operator, a Red Cross volunteer, and a member of the Houston Ham Convention, Greenwood Gun Club, Gulf Coast Rescue Squad, and the Friday Morning Men’s Group.
John is predeceased by his wife Joan. He is survived by his daughter Jean Tanner (Bill) and grandchildren McKenna and Cole of Houston, his son Jay Vanden Bos (Jill) of Austin, his sister Jan Wolf (Frank) of Kalamazoo, MI, his sister-in-law Jan Veen (Piet) of Holland, MI, and several nieces and a nephew.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 21, at 12:30pm at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, with Chaplain Jon Guyton officiating. Thank you to the staff at VITAS Hospice and Parkway Place for making his last weeks comfortable, and to all the friends and family who made his life memorable. He will be remembered fondly for his crooked smile and his love of puns.
