John J Sommer

John Jacob Sommer, age 82, passed away in the early hours of April 10, 2025, at his residence with both his daughters by his side. He was born in Mercedes, Texas, son to the late Pauline and Norman Sommer on August 23, 1942.

John is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Thanh Hoai Sommer; daughters, Christine Nuyen Sommer and Catherine Noel Persino; son in law, Byron James Persino; 3 grandchildren, Vincent John Persino, Dominic James Persino, and Cora Hoai Persino; sister and brother in law, Suzanne and Will Davis; and his nieces, Kelley Dalton and Holly Davis and their families.

John is preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Vincit Sommer; and nephew, Robin William Davis.

John graduated from Jones High School and University of Houston in Houston, Texas. In August 1967, John joined the Army and quickly advanced to earn the rank of Captain. John served his country for 3 years, most notably in the Vietnam War. During his service, he met his future wife whom he doted on for all his days. Together, they had 2 daughters whom they raised in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. John worked overseas for Saudi Aramco for a remarkable 21 years, and later retired to Spring, Texas.

For over 65 years, John was dedicated to Christian Science, and upon retirement, he served many volunteer positions at the Ninth Church of Christ, Scientist in Spring, Texas. In remembrance of John, the family has made a meaningful donation to The Mother Church of Christ, Scientist to honor his commitment to God.

His legacy will carry on forever reminding us God is LOVE, all-good, and all-powerful.

Memorial services will be held at Brookside Champions (3410 Cypress Creek Parkway, Houston, TX 77068) on Saturday, April 26 at 11:00 am with a reception to follow. A gun salute will be held at Houston National Cemetery (10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038) on Monday, April 28 at 10:45 am to commemorate his service to our country.
