With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John Papas, who left us on March 17, 2025, at the age of 61. John was a beloved son, cherished by his family and friends for his kindness, wisdom, and generous spirit. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on October 14, 1963, in Houston, TX, John was the son of Greek immigrants who came to the United States in search of a better life. He was immensely proud of his heritage, carrying forward the traditions and values instilled in him by his parents, Nick and Sophie Papas.
John was a graduate of St. Thomas Episcopal and later earned his law degree from South Texas College of Law.
John was deeply proud of his Greek heritage. For many years, he was a dedicated dancer in the Greek Festival, sharing his passion for traditional Greek music and culture with the community. He also served on the board of AHEPA, working to promote Hellenic values, education, and philanthropy.
John was also a lifetime member and devoted supporter of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, where he was heavily involved for most of his life. His commitment to preserving Western heritage, supporting youth scholarships, and fostering community engagement was a testament to his generous and passionate spirit.
An avid sports fan, John especially loved cheering on the Houston Cougars. Whether watching a game with friends or passionately discussing his favorite teams, his enthusiasm for sports was contagious.
John was the most analytical person you could ever meet. His sharp mind, attention to detail, and thoughtful approach to problem-solving made him a trusted voice of reason. Whether it was law, sports, or life’s biggest decisions, he had a unique way of breaking things down and offering insight that left a lasting impact on those around him. If you ever got into an analytical argument with him, buckle up—it was going to be a long ride!
His curiosity knew no bounds. John had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, with interests spanning everything from gardening to electronics to medicine. He wanted to know about everything, always seeking to understand the world in greater depth. His conversations were filled with insights, and his love for learning inspired those around him.
Although he didn’t always know how to show it, John had a heart as big as Texas. Beneath his sharp intellect and quick wit was a deeply caring and loyal soul, always willing to help those he loved in his own unique way.
Above all else, John’s faith in God and his church was unwavering. It was always at the forefront of his mind, guiding him through life’s challenges and triumphs. His belief in God shaped his values, his generosity, and his dedication to serving others.
As John never married, his parents were the most important part of his life. After his father passed away in 2011, John focused his attention on caring for his mother, Sophie. He diligently took care of her until her passing in 2021, showing a depth of love and devotion that was truly remarkable.
John is survived by his God children John Gavrel and Nicole Gregory Liebenstein as well as many cousins who will forever cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Nick and Sophie Papas.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Harry Yianitsas for his unwavering support and loving devotion over the years.
