John Richard Hall

J Richard Hall was born July 4, 1942 to James Howard Hall and Carolyn Eugenia Shull in Memorial Hospital, Houston TX. He attended West University Elementary, Will Rogers Elementary, Lanier Jr. High, and graduated from Lamar High School, 1960. He attended Baylor University, then the University of Houston where he majored in Accounting and was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. Hall went on to attend and graduate from South Texas College of Law, JD, 1969. He practiced law from 1969 to 2014. He served as Civil District Judge on the 270th District Court of Harris County, TX from 1995 – 1998.

He is predeceased by his parents and his older brother, James Shull Hall. He is survived by his brother Frederick Donald Hall and sisters Virginia Carolyn Saour and Rebecca McQueen Hall; sister-in-law Nancy Hall; and brother-in-law Saib Y. Saour; and a birth son Stephen Burrow, his wife Mary, and their children: Victoria, Phillip, Elizabeth and Evan and five nieces and nephews.

J Richard Hall, known to all as an erudite and good-natured man, celebrated the uniqueness of mankind and all the world cultures in every way throughout his life. His magnetic personality brought wonderful people together around him over the many good years of his life, often sharing in good times, stories, witty quips, history, poetry, music, food, drink, and loads of fun.

On July 6, 2022, J Richard Hall was honored with a portrait hanging ceremony in the 270th District Court. He made comments during the ceremony that reflected his strong beliefs regarding freedom and liberty for all and the democratic protection of the innocent from all manner of violence as a matter of deep conviction. He also recognized his son Stephen and the love of his life Alice Obermiller during the ceremony. On that day, Hall received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition and an official Commendation from the City of Houston Mayor's Office.

On that same occasion, Hall was quoted as saying, “I was proud of being a Judge, a Judge is charged with being fair and open minded and of rendering a fair trial for all parties.” And in that same spirit, Judge J Richard Hall strove to do the right thing throughout his life, and he in kind finished his race surrounded by the love, deep affection, and care of his entire surviving family and friends of whom gave him much happiness and joy during his life.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 am., Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Rd., Houston, TX 77055.
