Joan Dickinson Duemer, died on the 3rd of April 2024, at the age of 90. She was born in Columbus, Ohio, the fourth of seven children of Alice (Rosel) and Hal D. Dickinson on the 27th of January 1934. After graduation from Bexley High School Joan attended Ohio University and was a member of Chi Omega sorority, she married her beloved husband, Walter C. Duemer in 1952. She accompanied him as an Air Force wife to Germany and after his release from service did volunteer work in the cities where life took them – Cleveland, Ohio; Wayne, Pennsylvania; Houston three times, Greenville, South Carolina; Los Angeles, California and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Settling permanently in Houston she reveled in entertaining family and friends in her welcoming antique-filled home.
Joan continued her volunteerism as the curator of the David Hannah Memorial Library at The Hallmark where she lived independently for over six years. Her active life included hosting weekly bridge games and serving on various committees for the benefit of other Hallmark residents and employees. Joan was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in the years she lived in Houston.
Joan has joined her husband, Walt; son-in-law, R.P. “Skip” Cornelius; and siblings Ellen Butler and Bill Dickinson, in God’s heavenly care. She is survived by her five children; Laura Cornelius, Diana and her husband John Nabors, Barbara and her husband Bob Betancourt, Karl and his wife, Sherri McSpadden, and Kristina Campodonico; also eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Being part of a large family, Joan is also survived by four siblings: Francis Morrisey, Ruth Koester, Hal (Pete) Dickinson, Tim Dickinson and nieces and nephews from around the country. She considered her family and close friends as her loving, living legacy.
A memorial service is to be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 16th of May at First Presbyterian Church of Houston, 5300 Main Street, Houston, Texas 77004 with Reverend Jon Crantz officiating. Immediately following the service all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of customary remembrances the family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to First Presbyterian Church, or a charity of your choice.
