James Melvin McCollum, 82 years of age, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2023 in the Woodlands at Memorial Herman Hospital after suffering Covid Pneumonia. Jimmy was born in Rosebud, Texas on January 31, 1941. He was the son of Julia Donia (Tubbs) and Robert Lee McCollum. He was the brother to Rubin “Duck” Leland, Jack Charles, Robert Earl, Edward Lee, and Johnny McCollum. Jimmy grew up living in Rosebud Texas until he joined the Air Force in 1959. While in the military he served his country as military police officer and profiler.
Jimmy is best known to his friends and family as the man who brought love and laughter into their lives and will be remembered above all for his big heart and work ethic. Jimmy was one of the hardest working men who truly enjoyed his work. He spent his career as a salesman / merchandiser. He was a true salesman with a quick wit which helped him to forge enduring friendships form his early days in high school to his co-workers.
Above all else was his love of family. While he rarely said the words I love you, he showed his family his love through his dedication and hard work. Jimmy was blessed with a loving wife of 54 years and from this union they had 2 sons and 4 grandsons. He was very proud of his family and loved to talk about his “boys”. He also loved his dog, Little Girl and was always ready to tell you a story of her greatness in his eyes.
Jimmy is survived by his wife Doris McCollum, sons Darren and his wife Sarah and Robert McCollum, his grandsons Robert Alan, Russell Lee, Schuyler Ray and James Ross, his brother Johnny McCollum, his sister-n-laws Debbie Newland, Cheryl Ballard, Doris McCollum and Brenda McCollum as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 23 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Brookside Cypress-Creek Funeral Home, 9149 Highway 6 North, Houston, TX 77095. As Jimmy would have wanted it to be, guests are invited dress casually.
The funeral will be Friday, February 24 at 10:00 at the same location. We will follow up with a graveside service at 12:00 at the Memorial Oaks Cemetery located at 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079.
