Howard Byron Cheek Jr., age 70, of Houston, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 30, 2023, after a short hospitalization. Howard was born in Houston on June 9, 1952. Howard attended Longfellow Elementary School and T.H. Rogers Junior High School. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Houston where he was chosen “Most Handsome” two years in a row. He earned a B.A. from the University of Texas where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Howard was an excellent slalom water skier, and enjoyed boating, surfing, and bowling. Much of his work life involved sales for his father’s business, Houston Wholesalers, Inc. In his later years, Howard volunteered at The Food Bank of Houston and was named the Volunteer of the Year. He followed and loved the Houston Astros since the club’s creation in 1962 as the Colt.45s. He was a member of Tallowood Baptist Church and of its Chapel Class Bible Study Connect Group.
Howard is preceded in death by his parents, Howard Byron Cheek and Mary Elizabeth Owen Cheek of Houston; and his niece, Joy Elizabeth Williams of Houston. He is survived by his sister, Candice “Candy” Joy Cheek Williams, and her husband, Walter F. “Trey” Williams, III, and his nephew Trent Owen Williams, all of Houston. Both he and his sister affectionately called each other “Bo”. He is also survived by numerous relatives in Alabama and Tennessee.
He is also survived by his special friend, Kath Hock, of San Antonio.
Howards family would like to thank the nurses, staff and administrators at Brighton Senior Living of Katy and the doctors and nurses at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Katy for their loving care of Howard.
A celebration of the life of Howard will be held at 11:30 AM on Thursday, August 10, 2023. It will take place at The Chapel of Tallowood Baptist Church, 555 Tallowood Drive, Houston, TX. A reception will follow after the service.
