Helen Killian Oliver was born on October 6, 1931, in New York City, and having lived a long and happy life died peacefully in Houston on March 30, 2014. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Amelia and Johannes Killian, as well as by her brother Charles Killian. Helen is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Steve Oliver, as well as by her daughter Barbara Ayers and her husband Randy, her son Stephen Oliver and his wife Gail, and her grandson John Ayers. Helen is also survived by her brothers Peter Killian and his wife Connie, Paul Killian and his wife Linda, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Helen attended William Bryant High School and Hunter College in New York City, where she met and married Steve in 1953. During their 60 years together, Helen and Steve travelled the world, living in New York City, Houston, Amsterdam and Tokyo, before finally retiring to Houston in 1986.
Helen was a beloved wife, a loving mother and grandmother, an avid bridge player and an accomplished traveler, having visited 6 continents and many countries over the years. In fact, for their 60th anniversary, Helen and Steve had only recently flown to Venice and sailed back to Florida on the inaugural trans-Atlantic crossing of the Royal Princess. Helen was active in several organizations including the Memorial Women’s’ Club, Cancer Fighters of Houston, and a number of bridge groups.
Helen will be dearly missed by her family and her many friends. She was a strong woman who loved her family and lived her life to the fullest each and every day. May God bless her, and may she rest in peace.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 3rd at 6:00 p.m., with the Rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77077. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, April 4th at 1:00 p.m. at St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church, 13350 Ashford Point Drive, Houston, TX 77082, with a reception to follow in the Church hall.
