Hazel Mary Joseph was born on December 23, 1930 to the Union of Rogers & Clara Peters in Shepherd, Texas, where her family was Share Croppers. With this union was 6 children, Hazel was 3rd to the oldest child. After losing her mother at an young age, she was raised by her Grandmother,Easter Payton (sister to Billy Dee Williams Grandmother) along with her youngest sister, Gladys Marie. She attended school in Jacinto County, in Sheperd, Texas. She accepted Christ at an early age where she attended a Baptist Church regularly. Later she joined her other siblings and lived with her father and stepmother.
In 1945, the Peters family moved to (Acres Homes) Houston, Texas where they lived on Maxroy Street across from The Goodie Family. This is where she met U.S. Navy Sailor, Wilford Joseph, it was love at first site. She then converted to the Catholic Religion, where she was a parishioner at St. Monica Cathlic Church. Shortly thereafter she married Wilford in 1948. With this union they had a total of 18 children, 10 girls, and 8 boys. Wilford had a son, Wayne from his previous marriage, and Hazel had her first daughter, Patricia Haddie Lamar. They had 16 children together, a total of 18 children, They made sure all their children made their First Communion and Confirmation. Wilford and Hazel resided at 9010 Wheatley St.
Hazel was a sweet soul, wise before her time. She was a homemaker, devoted wife and a loving mother. Having a big family she learned how to be very resourceful and budget every penny. Every morning she would make breakfast, read the bible to her husband, and pray for others. In her spare time she loved singing gospel songs, sewing, cooking, and entertaining along side of her husband. Everyone was welcome to the Joseph's House. She loved feeding people, and making you feel comfortable with her wonderful charm. No one was treated like a stranger, she was kind to everyone she came in contact with. She had a smile that would light up the room, and a laugh that was very unique.
Her grandchildren and great granchildren was very special to her. She helped raised the majority of her grand kids, especially the ones that lived with her. Whenever they came to visit she would make sure they left with some kind of snack. She always kept bags of snacks close by. Her favorite snacks were, Mr. Good Bar, Nestle Crunch Bar, Kit Kat, Almond Joy, Cheetos, Pork Skins, Lays Chips, Funyuns and Hog Head Cheese. She loved Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup, Fried chicken and her favorite drink was Dr. Pepper. She loved her some red, she would always color coordinate red in her wardrobe, along with her Ruby Red Lispstick.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Rogers Peters and Clara Payton, siblings; James, Ester, Preston, husband, Wilford, daughter, Clara "Pinky", sons Kennedy, Leary, stepson, Wayne; son-n-law Troy Mason, grandsons, Wilford IV, Nathan I, Leary III, Monte Harris, McCollins Umeh.
She is survived by her two sisters, Wilma Jean Rudolphe of Phoenix, Arizona, and Gladys Marie Peters-Reece, her sons and daughters, Joe Louis, Galette "Pat" Mason, Theresa Times (Roy), Wilford II (Pam), William III (Charolette), Bertha, Marjorie, Letha Johnson (Pete), Roger (Jennifer), Henry (Lisa), Mary Sanders (Alvin), Vanessa, Lucy, and Kendra. Many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, cousins, and host of friends.
