Peacefully passed away at the age of 99 on September 1, 2021. She was born May 28, 1922 in Watonga, Oklahoma. Gerry was a graduate of Watonga High School and attended Blackwood Davis College in Oklahoma City. Her first job was performing the high dive to entertain patrons at a local hotel. She also worked in the hotel’s accounting department. She married Karol K. Litman on Friday November 29, 1940 in Sherman, Texas. As a newly wed she moved to Mount Pleasant, Michigan where her first daughter Lucinda was born. Her husband’s job working in oil and gas took them to Corpus Christi, Texas where her second daughter Karol Kay was born. Then they moved to New Orleans, Louisiana to raise their children for over 20 years.
Following in the footsteps of her father, Gerry became an accomplished artist. She studied painting in the French Quarter of New Orleans. She enjoyed doing projects such as landscaping, wood burning, decoupage, and jewelry design. Gerry loved singing, playing the piano, traveling, and gardening. She volunteered for the P.E.O. and was elected her chapter’s president and drew all the illustrations for their charitable cook book. Her artistic talents helped to create logos and decorations for businesses. She was a member of the Krewe of Dorians.
After moving to Houston, Texas she earned her license as a real estate broker. Gerry was a member of Lakeside Country Club and enjoyed playing bridge. In her late seventies she moved to Brookshire, Texas where she lived out in the country and started a small business rescuing thoroughbred horses. Gerry invested in longhorn cattle and won several world championship titles. Gerry was an active member of Lake Vista United Methodist Church in New Orleans, Louisiana and Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.
Gerry was preceded in death by her husband Karol K. Litman. Her second husband Link William Welch, Jr. Her daughter Lucinda Lee Litman Brunner. Her parents Leon James Chaufty and Lorinda Myrtle Lynch Chaufty. Her sisters Goldie, Thelma, Eva, Erma, and Lavonta. Her brothers Everette, Wayne, and Leon. She is survived by her daughter Karol Kay Litman Sargent. Her granddaughter Katie Lee Sargent Blades and husband, Joe, great-grandchildren Jack, Lee, and Bonnie Blades, and her many nieces and nephews.
The family and friends will gather for a private interment and memorial service at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
