George Royalty “Rook” Edwards, born in Waco, Texas, February 17, 1926, son of Herbert Rook Edwards and Margaret Royalty Edwards of Waco, Texas, passed into the loving hands of the Lord on July 8, 2015, embraced by his family in his home thanks to hospice care. He joined the Army Air Corps in WWII then returned to Baylor graduating Law School in 1949. Rook won a scholarship for graduate study in International Law at the University of London, where he finished with honors. He began his law practice in Waco by forming the law firm of Edwards, Ressler, Horner & Lebowitz. His practice was interrupted when he was recalled to Active Duty with the Air Force during the Korean Conflict where he served as a JAG Officer. He retired as a Captain, U.S.A.F. and served as a commercial pilot for a number of years thereafter. Rook joined the Shrine and became a member of the Karem Temple.
On his release from the Air Force, he served as an Assistant District Attorney in Waco. Rook practiced law as a Board Certified Oil & Gas attorney in Houston. He has served multiple terms on the Board of the State Bar College, and the Houston Bar Association’s Continuing Education Committee. He was also proud to have served on the board of Banks, Insurance and Oil Companies. After the love of family, his love of flying was in first place. He enjoyed his association with the Houston Hanger of The Quiet Birdmen. Rook will always be remembered for his quick wit, ready stories, and zest for life.
Rook is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Marlene M. Edwards, his son David Brett Edwards, his daughter, Deborah Marie Davenport, and his beloved grandchildren Jeffrey Dean Davenport and Lana Marie Davenport.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 13, 2015 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Earthman’s Hunter’s Creek Funeral Home, 8303 Katy Freeway in Houston. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Earthman’s with the Reverend James H. McPhail of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church officiating. Graveside service at the family plot in Oakwood Cemetery in Waco will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at 2:00 pm, conducted by the minister of the Austin Avenue Methodist Church where Rook served as an usher and member of the Board of Stewards.
Rook and his family express gratitude to their family physician and his tireless medical team for enabling him to live fully and die on his own terms. In lieu of flowers, Rook wanted donations to the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, The Emerald Circle Endowed Scholarship, 3110 Southwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77210
