Her husband, E. Kirk Newman, predeceased her by six years. It was with him that she travelled to every continent except Australia, sometimes in the execution of his position with Chevron, sometimes just for fun! And fun it was for them. Gene and Kirk married in 1942 and had almost 64 years together. She was a war bride working until he came home. She and he both attended the University of Texas. She did not finish her degree, but she attended colleges in California and Roswell to continue her formal education. Her informal education was extensive , including indoor and outdoor gardening,, painting and drawing, golf, gourmet cooking, sewing, needlework, tatting, decorating, bridge and contract bridge, furniture restoration, series of literary lectures, and bookkeeping. Every house or apartment they lived in was a pleasure to see. Her watercolors, oil paintings, and acrylic paintings decorate the houses of her family members as well as her own. Her most notable field of expertise was in her nurturing nature which made for a lovely home for her family.
Gene is survived by her daughter Cathey Newman Jones and her husband L. P. Jones, Jr. of Houston, TX, her granddaughter Erin Jones Johnston and her husband Grant, her great granddaughter Charlotte Lee Johnston. Her brother Bill Hulsey and his wife Ginger of Fort Worth as well as their daughter Kimberly Hulsey Desrosiers and her husband David and their three children Michael, Rachel, and Kyle all of Fort Worth are also surviving family. Her sister Ouida Mae’s daughters Linda and Peggy are living in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.
She is predeceased by her husband Kirk, and two sisters and their husbands.
