Fred Cooper, 97, of Houston, TX, died on August 10, 2022. He was born January 8, 1925, in Alexandria, Arkansas, to Frank and Minnie Cooper. The family moved to Houston when he was 3. He was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in the Heights area where he met his wife of 67 years. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Deloise Doering, daughters Kay Keery, Sharon Hubert, Carol Stark and son Kyle Cooper, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Fred attended Immanuel Lutheran Grammar School and then attended Reagan High School, where he took advanced courses and was a member of the National Honor Society. He started working for a wage at age 10 and received his social security card at age 12. He served as a navigator in the Army Air Corp during WWII and the GI bill allowed him the opportunity to earn his Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University. Fred had a long and prosperous career working as a design engineer providing equipment to the oil and gas industry. He loved sports and played softball in youth leagues, intramurals and adult leagues. Fred was always busy. He was either teaching Sunday school, serving on a board at church, remodeling something, planting flowers or attending a Rice athletic event. He commented that keeping 3 daughters in cars was a full-time job. Fred loved singing in the church choir, and he and his wife Marilyn spent many evenings in the company of friends playing bridge or 42.
Funeral service will be Friday August 19th at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 306 E 15th St, Houston, TX, 77008. Visitation will be at 9:30 am with the service immediately following at 10:30 am. A private interment will be at the VA cemetery. Pall Bearers: Kyle Cooper, Paul Keery, Dale Hubert, Darryl Stark, Kelin Bower, Josh Cooper. Honorary: Vic Atsinger, Bob McFarland.
