Fern Mona Glass was born Fern Mona Royal on the 27th day of August, 1929. A beautiful baby girl, born into a large extended family of preachers, singers, Sunday school teachers, in-laws and outlaws. As a young woman Fern was fiesty, pretty and full of energy. That attracted a young navel man by the name of Andrew Payton Glass and by June 9, 1945 they were married. Wed in her parent’s home on a stormy day, they soon found it was necessary to use a row boat to leave the house as Houston had flooded that day! From that day on came a life of tears brought on by joy, laughter and sorrow. Joy over the birth of their five sons and two daughters. Sorrow over one of their sons that went to be with Jesus soon after birth. Joy over their children coming to know Christ as their savior and laughter over all the strange things their children did. Like giving squashed frogs funerals. Taking turns preaching the services and singing.
Fern was a very talented woman. She could sing, play the piano, cook, sew, did all kinds of crafts and painted masterpieces. One of which is in Governor Bill Daniels home of the Cherry family pioneer home.
Andrew felt the Lord compel him to become a preacher. And with that calling his wife became a ‘preacher’s wife’. Any woman who has become one can tell you that life becomes a new ball game. At times it was difficult indeed. It’s one of the toughest roles for a woman. And as far as their children? Well, you know about PK’s. Everyone can tell you a story about the wife and kids! She knew her bible and could tell you real quick when a preacher strayed from the truth and didn’t mind saying so. Fern was a strong believer and a woman of strenght.
Fern loved southern gospel music. The biggest highlight of her life was when at a concert J.D Sumner kissed her. And if you didn’t believe it she had the picture to prove it.
Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her joy in life. She loved them all and they in turn loved her. Fern longed for her Andy every day and was so lonesome for him. She said so often.
Life can be hard but a Mother’s arms are always soft and tender. Just like our Father’s arms. Always open to love us, hold us and welcome us.
Her sons are: Andrew Payton Glass II, Timothy Floyd Henry Glass, Phillip Dwayne Glass, Joseph Nathaniel Glass, Her baby boys name is Guy Lester Glass. Daughters are: Gloria Lanette Murray and Cheryl Lyn Flowers. Fourteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Fern was a beloved precious gift to us from God.
The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.
Blessed be the name of the Lord.
