Ernest Eguia, age 95, passed away surrounded by his family, May 3, 2015. Born in Lockhart, Texas, Houstonian since 1921, Ernest was preceded in death by his brother Leon, sisters Ida, Tillie, Theresa and Ruth. Ernest is survived by his wife of 67 years, Maria Eguia; four children, Diane DeYoung, Rebecca Eguia Curry, David Ernest Eguia and wife Sylvia Eguia, Mark Steven Eguia and wife Debbie Eguia; four grandchildren, Mark Andrew Schlossberg, Kimberly Curry Kersten, Madelyn E DeYoung, Matthew James Curry, Michael B Eguia, Sam Ernest Eguia; and two great grandchildren, Addison and Brody. Ernest was a child of the Great Depression, proudly served in WWII, landed on Utah Beach, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and witnessed Nordhausen concentration camp. Active in LULAC for 67 years, he and Council 60 were instrumental in placing the first Hispanics in the Houston Fire and Police departments, creating national programs such as SER, Service, Education and Redeployment; the Little School of 400, predecessor to Head Start and was influential in bringing President John F Kennedy and Jacqueline, LBJ and Lady Bird Johnson to the Houston Rice Hotel on November 21, 1963. A celebration of his life will be held 5-8 p.m., Wednesday May 6, 2015 at Heights Funeral Home, 1317 Heights Boulevard, Houston, TX 77008. Thursday, May 7, family and friends will congregate at 10:30a.m. at Heights Funeral Home with procession to the U.S. Houston National Military Cemetery at 11:30 a.m.
