Ermelinda Castro, 76, passed away on Good Friday, April 18, 2014, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Our “Little Lady,” a long-time resident of Houston, was born in Taylor, Texas where she married and gave birth to her ten children.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lorenzo and Feliciana Lopez, sister Maria Guadalupe Vera, and granddaughters, Loréal Bronté Castro & Angelle Victoria Diaz.
She is survived by her 10 children and their spouses, David & Linda Castro, Patricia & Jorge Gonzalez, Elizabeth & Raul Gomez, John & Rosie Castro, SSG(R) Gabriel Castro, Melinda & Robert Diaz, Peter & Leticia Castro, Ruben Castro, Ben & Michelle Castro, Angelo & Amanda Castro and Pedro C. Castro their father, 25 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and her siblings Mary Gamez, Susie Lucio, Lorenzo & Eva Lopez, Paul & Lucy Lopez, Richard & Josie Lopez, Olga & Ray Gonzales, Gloria Moreno, many nieces and nephews, and her beloved pooch, “Nicki”.
Though small in stature, Ermelinda radiated love, humor, strength, and wisdom and lived life to the fullest. She beat breast cancer twice and thru this battle inspired many to stay strong during difficult times.
Ermelinda was employed by HISD at Lorenzo DeZavala Elementary as a cashier for 31 years until her retirement. She had many passions, mostly, she loved to read the Bible, spend time shopping, and attend her children and grandchildren’s school functions and events where she loved to use the latest technology to take videos and pictures. She also loved to cook and travel. She visited places all over the world, including Germany, France, Italy, and Vatican City, Rome where she attended Mass, officiated by Pope John Paul II. Most recently, she traveled to visit her grandson and family in Alberta, Canada, and Idaho.
Known as Mrs. Castro at DeZalava Elementary, she was admired and loved by the many students, coworkers, and neighborhood kids whom she lovingly welcomed into her home.
The family will receive family and friends on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 with a Vigil Service and Rosary at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, 11011 Hall Rd. Houston, TX 77089 at 7:30 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 11:00 am at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church.
The family will receive family and friends on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Condra Funeral Home, 503 Talbot Street. Taylor, Texas, 76574 at 4:00 pm with recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 pm.
