Elva Torres

On Monday, April 19, 2021, Elva Torres, loving mother of my brother and I and loving grandmother of Marley, passed away at the age of 54. Elva was born on March 7, 1967 in Dodger city Los Angeles, California to Timoteo and Luisa Hernandez. Her parents eventually relocated the kids to Mexico where my mom became the trendsetter for all 80s hair styles and music. She loved Madonna and hairspray for that ultimate voluminous hair. Elva was her mother's sidekick helping her keep the house running and she was a daddy's girl. She went to college in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico to become a Bilingual Administrative Assistant. After persistent courting by my relentless father, she married Francisco Torres on May 9, 1987. in 1991, when she was pregnant with her first child, she decided to move to Houston, Texas to provide the best life she could for her children and where she would finally be able to be true to herself as a die hard Astros fan. So she told my dad "meet me there" and off she went. Once in Houston, Elva and her sister Ana helped each other begin a life In Houston. Here, my mom and dad built a life from nothing. She had multiple jobs in retail, daycare, and lastly, as a child nutritionist at Crosby I.S.D. In all of these jobs, my mom's fun loving and caring soul shined. At 50 Off she met Sandra who became a lifelong friend and my brothers God mother. At Candyland Daycare, all the kids and staff loved her. At Crosby, her coworkers knew her as "mama". She put her heart in everything she did. Emilia, sister to Elva, was her partner in crime, gossiping for hours of God only knows what could've happened since the last phone call they had 12 hours ago. My mom loved music from Linda Ronstadt, to Madonna, to Adele, to Rhianna, to Elefante, to Pricila y Sus Balas De Plata. Her music taste is pretty extensive. She was a hopeless romantic at heart. Her favorite movie was The Notebook and she loved any movie starring Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, and Keanu Reeves. Above all, she treasured her children and snow globe collection the most. She always said "primero mis hijos, y luego mis hijos, y al ultimo mis hijos". Until her very last days, when I was caring for her in her sickness, she told me to put my socks back on before I caught a cold. Elva is survived by her parents, her daughter Jennifer and her son Francisco Jr, her husband, her five brothers and two sisters, her puppy grandson Marley, and many nieces, nephews, and loving friends. Elva is preceded in death by her dear nephew Hector Ramos, and her furry/feathered babies Oreo, Mamis, and Lily. I'm thankful she was not alone as she left this Earth surrounded by her family through her journey to Heaven where my cousin was there to meet her and guide her. Mami, we all love you so much and miss you already.
