Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind;
In the primal sympathy
Which having been must ever be;
In the soothing thoughts that spring
Out of human suffering;
In the faith that looks through death,
In years that bring the philosophic mind.”
― William Wordsworth
Elizabeth M. “Chilly” Alcantar, 57, passed away on December 3, 2021 surrounded by her loving family.
A lifelong reader who adored all literature, Liz never allowed the complications of her illness to affect her beautiful spirit and vivid imagination.
Throughout her battle she continued to be the light in the lives of her friends and family.
She was born to Ben Ambriz and Becky Lopez Ambriz on November 27, 1964. The first grandchild on her mother’s side, she assumed her role as the older cousin and big sister with much enthusiasm. She lived to make everyone smile and arm them with “gifts” of knowledge she acquired. Liz proclaimed “I was given the gift of being a presence in so many lives of my younger cousins, it was wonderful!”
She met John Alcantar while attending Austin High School. After graduating in 1982, the two set out on their own separate paths. Liz studied accountancy at University of Houston - Downtown and would later earn her degree in 2008. She gained employment at the Hadrian Corp where she worked for almost 30 years. In 2012, a book-worthy love story ensued, after John located Liz on Facebook. Their reunion would rekindle the sparks they shared 32 years earlier and in 2013 the high school sweethearts tied the knot.
Liz loved creating delicious meals from scratch. She loved to travel, to laugh, to sing. She had such a brilliant mind and a quick comedic wit. She loved to crochet blankets for the new babies in the family. She was a great story-teller and Judy Garland impersonator. Her personality and laugh were contagious and people were drawn to her. Most importantly, she never missed an opportunity to remind those around her that they were loved.
Liz is survived by her loving husband John, her step children Aloura and Christian Alcantar, her parents Ben Ambriz and Becky Lopez Ambriz, and her brother Robert Ambriz (Eunice), nephew Ryan, nieces Dana (Stephen), Karen (Daniel) and Mia and great-niece Catalina De La Garza. She was preceded in death by grandparents Lucy and Gabriel Lopez, Pedro and Juliana Ambriz, aunt and uncle Linda and Jesse Gonzalez, uncles Frank, Johnny, Edward, and aunt Mary Ambriz.
“What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal.”
