In 1945, Betty parents moved her and her brothers Cecil Francis (Sonny) and John Martin (Marty) to Houston, Texas. Betty attended Incarnate Word Academy in Houston and graduated in 1958. She decided early in life that she wanted to be a nurse, so following high school graduation she moved to Galveston, Texas to attend Saint Mary's School of Nursing. Betty graduated from college in 1961, and she began her nursing career that spanned over 5 decades. It was her time in college that she made lifelong friends with Shelly Curless Allen (Charlie), her future sister-in-law Linda Anderson Roan (Wylie), and her husband, Fred Kent Anderson of Texas City. She often reminisced of her college days and young adulthood with great fondness for this close knit group of friends.
Betty and Fred married in 1964 and started their life together in Houston. After the birth of their first child, Suzanne Marie, they moved to Texas City where they welcomed the birth of their son, Frederick Wilson. The lived and raised Suzanne and Rick in their family home forming friendships in Texas City. They taught their children the value of hard work as well as the enjoyment from cooking, being on he water swimming, skiing, and fishing. Betty and the children traveled to be with Fred while he worked in other parts of the world. Betty continued working as a nurse while raising a family and being a caregiver for so many. Betty lovingly cared for Fred until his death at age 56 in 1993.
Betty returned to Boston in 1996 where she worked and retired from Harvard University in 2012.
At the time of her retirement, Betty had found she wanted more time to spend with her children and grandchildren in California and Texas. Her four grandchildren had her undivided attention and her love for them was evident to all. She passed on her love of cooking, knitting, and fishing to all four of them.
