Eleanor Frances Grainger, age 91, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2014. Eleanor was born in Texas City, Texas on November 17, 1922, as the third of Vincent and Margaret Grainger's five children. She moved to Houston at an early age and attended the city's public schools. Eleanor graduated from the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor and taught for two years at Sherman Elementary School in Roselle Park, NJ. Returning to Houston following the death of her father, "Miss Grainger" is still remembered by many of her former students from the twenty years she taught 2nd and 3rd grade at River Oaks Elementary School.
After a 25-year teaching career, Eleanor was asked by the President of The Methodist Hospital to join the hospital's staff where she served as Media Director, Editor of The Journal, and volunteer coordinator for almost three decades of dedicated service. Eleanor loved God and her family with equal passion. Her faith brought great comfort in her later years as she was ever closer to being reunited with those she cared about most, her parents and siblings. Eleanor was predeceased by her sister and three brothers, Vincent Grainger, Jr., Elizabeth (Peg) Thompson, Oswald Grainger and Bobby Grainger; her sisters-in-law, Ann Grainger, Arlene Grainger, and her brother-in-law and dear friend, JQ Thompson.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews and their children.Eleanor lived at the Holly Hall Retirement Community since 1992. Her family would like to thank her many friends and the staff there for their love and care during that time. They would also like to express their gratitude to the physicians and staff at Methodist Hospital for the excellent care they provided Eleanor. As a child growing up in the Depression, Eleanor learned the virtues of moderation and frugality.
In lieu of flowers, friends and family are encouraged to express their gratitude and remembrances of Eleanor through gifts to those organizations of which she was especially fond: West University United Methodist Church, Holly Hall Retirement Community and Methodist Hospital Houston.A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 10, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Forest Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas, 77077.
