Elaine Shing

Elaine Tang Shing, age 68, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 26, 2020 at Memorial Hermann Hospital surrounded by her two loving sons, her brother, and ex-husband. She is survived by sons Jason Shing and wife Jamie Lim, Eric Shing and wife Amanda Shing; grandchildren Penelope Shing and Tinsley Shing; siblings Jerry Tang, Debbie Pascucci, Ed Tang and Harry Tang; extended family members and her sweet CoCo.

Born in Miami, Florida on January 24, 1952, second eldest of five siblings, Elaine spent much of her adolescence working at the family grocery store and restaurant and helping her parents, Ely Tang and Eileen Chi, look after her younger siblings. She was impeccably dressed as a child and was crowned Skipper Chuck’s Queen of the Day on a local children’s television program.

Elaine graduated with an Associate in Arts degree from Miami Dade Community College. While in high school, Elaine met her ex-husband Wayne Shing and married shortly after graduating college. The newlyweds moved to Dallas, Texas where they frequently commuted between Dallas and Houston to play tennis with other tennis fanatics. Wayne’s new job and their love for tennis permanently relocated them to Houston.

Elaine worked as a retail associate at the downtown Foleys department store until she became a full-time mother to her two sweet sons, Jason and Eric. She selflessly gave her life to care for her children. Elaine took joy in providing for her family and sold handmade t-shirts to purchase extra Christmas presents for her boys. She loved to provide feasts for her family and friends, made sure everyone was full, and left with a container of left-overs. Her cream cheese brownies, fried chicken, and Mexican wedding cakes were just a few of her fan favorites.

During her free time, Elaine enjoyed playing competitive tennis and was a member in a league for over 15 years. She was captain of her tennis team and took charge in scheduling matches and upkeeping the neighborhood tennis courts. Elaine’s competitive edge in bowling, ping pong, card games, board games, and Mahjong was the foundation of her son’s love for competition.

She loved having extended family gatherings and was the glue of the Tang family. Elaine captured all the memories and created custom calendars that included all the birthdays, anniversaries, and big events for the entire Tang clan. Elaine would be the first person to remember an important event and always reached out via text or phone. In the last two years, her greatest joy was having weekly visits with her granddaughters. She loved holding, hugging, and telling the girls how much she loved them.

Elaine was a light who touched countless lives. Her vibrant personality, honesty, kindness, generosity, and boundless love for family will be forever remembered. God blessed her - Elaine never had to fear death and continued “feeling fine” until she left this earth to join her mother and father in Heaven.

A celebration of Elaine’s life will be held on January 8th at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home. She will lay to rest in the beautiful garden.
