Edward George Rizk MD

Noted pediatrician and longtime Houston physician, Dr. Edward George Rizk, passed away early Saturday, July 19, 2014. Dr. Rizk was born February 11, 1923 in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from East High School and attended Drake University before transferring to The State University of Iowa where he graduated from the Carver College of Medicine in 1946.

Dr. Rizk served as a member of the United States Army Medical Corp for three years serving as Regimental Surgeon for the 26th Infantry Division in post-war Germany. While stationed in Germany, Dr. Rizk met and married a visiting American, Billie Brooks Carr.

After returning from military service, Dr. Rizk completed his residency requirements in Mobile and Birmingham, Alabama and Cincinnati, Ohio before going into private practice for 8 years in Youngstown, Ohio. In 1960, Dr. Rizk and his family relocated to Houston where he established himself as a well- respected pediatrician in the city for over 30 years. He was a lifetime member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, The Harris County Medical Society, served as Chief of Staff at Bellaire Hospital and was on the medical staff at Texas Children’s Hospital for over 50 years.

Dr. Rizk had a lifelong passion for medicine and traveled the world enjoying his other two passions, hunting and fishing. He committed as much time, effort, discipline and research to become an accomplished sportsman as he did a physician. He was respected in both areas.

Dr. Edward G. Rizk was pre-deceased by his parents, Mousa and Souria Rizk, his brother Fred E. Rizk and brothers Michelle Rizk, Emil Rizk, Carl Rizk and Richard DeBakey. He is survived by his wife of over 65 years Billie, his daughter Shelley Jean Royer and her husband Michael Royer and two grandchildren, Cynthia Laine Royer and Christopher Brooks Royer, sister-in-laws Sylvia Rizk and Isobel DeBakey.

There will be a Memorial Service at St. John the Divine Chapel at 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 26, 2014 officiated by The Reverend Reagan Cocke with a reception immediately following in Sumners Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in his name to Texas Children’s Hospital, DeBakey Medical Foundation or the charity of their choice.
