Edward House Andrews, Jr., son of the late Edward House Andrews and Gladys Madigin Andrews, died on the 11th of April 2011, while surrounded by his loving family in Houston. A lifelong and native Houstonian, he was born on the 22nd of November 1924. He attended Poe Elementary, Lanier Junior High School, two years at Lamar High School (beginning the year in which the school opened) and two years at the Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, graduating in 1941. He then entered Yale College in the fall of 1941, graduating in three years, at age 19, to join the U.S. Navy in 1944. He served as a Lieutenant (junior grade) in the Pacific Theatre.
Following his return to civilian life, Mr. Andrews spent two years in graduate Latin American studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Returning to Houston, he joined the Hughes Tool Company, where he produced economic feasibility studies for various international projects. In the mid-1950s, Mr. Andrews started TIFCO Inter-America Corporation, facilitating exports to the Latin American market. Fluent in Spanish, French, and Portuguese, he was active in the World Trade Society and other international organizations in Houston in the 1950s and 60s.
A fifth-generation Texan and grandson of Andrews & Kurth founder, Frank Andrews, he was a lifelong member of The Church of St. John the Divine. Mr. Andrews was an active member of Allegro, the Houston Country Club, River Oaks Country Club, Bayou Club, The Argyle in San Antonio, and The Galveston Artillery Club.
He was a founding member of the Garwood Hunting Lease, The San Antonio-Houston Golf Association, The South Texas Chapter of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin and the Accademia Della Cucina Italiana. A horseracing enthusiast, Mr. Andrews was a founding member of the Texas Racing Association. Every June found him at Royal Ascot in England, and every August he returned to the races at Saratoga Springs, NY, where he was a member of The Reading Room.
His philanthropic activities included Planned Parenthood, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Bayou Bend, and Ducks Unlimited.
He leaves behind three loving children: Edward House Andrews III, Nina Kay Andrews Karohl and Gladys Louise Andrews Moss. He is survived by five grandchildren: Anna Christina Moss, Nicholas Madigin Moss and Carolina Camille Moss, Isabel Andrews Karohl and Christopher Edward Andrews Karohl. In addition, he is survived by his sons-in-law, Gary Philemon Moss and David Allen Karohl; and first cousins, Frank Andrews and wife Cheryl of Hunt, Texas, Susan Schubert of Tombstone, Arizona, and Ben Andrews and wife Christine of Houston.
“Eduardo” had a large circle of close friends who will long recall his intelligence, charm, and sense of humor. He was an enthusiastic host and dancer--a noted bon vivant. Whether it was orchestrating a gourmet evening at the Opening Day at Garwood or giving elegant, candle-lit dinners at his lovely home, “Eduardo” knew and enjoyed entertaining. Family holiday occasions in Houston and Cuernavaca, Mexico were favorites.
A lover of animals, especially his dear pussy cats, he enjoyed nature and the outdoors. He relished time spent on the golf course, in the duck blind, reading novels, and traveling to exotic countries. “Eduardo” lived life to its fullest, and he will be greatly missed.
The family is grateful to Elizabeth Ducoff and Jo Mosely for their long and loyal service to Edward Andrews and to his family. In recent years, under the very able supervision of Melisa Frisby, R.N., Tammie Roberts, Kalisha Bernard, Merle Rostant, Ann Belisle and Annancia Francis greatly contributed to his care and well being, as did Beverly Thomas. The family gratefully acknowledges his doctors, Dr. Michelle Cunningham and Dr. Victor J. Narcisse, Jr. for their dedication and commitment to “EHA.”
A memorial service is to be conducted at three o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 15th of April, in the sanctuary of The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, where the Rev.
